Richard's Medicine Lake Journey

Day Six, September 3, 2004

Awaking at first light, I hear the wind still howling, and pull on layer after layer of clothing. I had ideas of spending another day here, but Medicine Lake had other ideas. As I come out of the tent and look around, I see the vapors rising off the lake. Above, the wind howls, but at lake level, it is strangely calm, and freezing.

Clicking the little picture makes the big picture open in a new window.
In spite of the cold, the lake is too beautiful to resist, and I hike down to the beach and stand there in awe.
Wishing now that I had skill in photography and a better camera, I take what will become one of my favorite pictures from this tour.
This image of the frost patterns on the beach is the basis for the page background throughout this story.

Returning to camp, I make breakfast, eat in the car again, and break camp. Medicine Lake has set the limit and exacted a price for my visit. As I get in the car to leave, I realize that I am down to the last kleenex, and it's paper towels and napkins until I get far away enough for the allergy to let up. I scoot back to Burney Falls in time for lunch and another hike around the falls loop. Again, I am grateful for the hot showers. I haven't had a real shower or a shave since I left here Tuesday, so that is a top priority. I spend the afternoon resting in camp and reading, and reflecting on my journey, as the park fills up with Labor Day weekenders.
